Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Birthday Party & Exhibit Opening
To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Johnson’s birth, the LBJ Library and Museum is presenting a major exhibit on space entitled To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s. The exhibit opens at 9:00 a.m. on August 27, 2008, and ends on July 20, 2009, the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. As Senate majority leader, Johnson co-sponsored the legislation creating NASA, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008. To read more about the exhibit, please click here.
In honor of LBJ’s birthday, cake, water, and coffee will be served in the Great Hall of the LBJ Library from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Birthday cake will also be served on the West Mall near the Texas Union.
That evening, the Austin community is invited to a free, Texas-sized party to celebrate LBJ’s birthday. President and Mrs. Johnson were famous for the barbeque dinners they held to entertain foreign dignitaries, astronauts, members of his administration, and their friends. The celebration will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in a large tent on the lawn in front of the Library.
Highlights include:
Rudy’s Bar-B-Q dinner
LBJ peach ice cream from Amy’s Ice Creams
Fresca (LBJ’s favorite soft drink) and other beverages provided by Austin Coca-Cola
Music by The Riff Ryders
Fun, family-friendly activities, including a balloon wrangler
Live TV coverage of the Democratic National Convention
Visitors are encouraged to tour the new space exhibit. The Library and Museum will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Those who tour the exhibit will be entered into a raffle for an assortment of unique door prizes.
The Museum Store will also remain open until 8:00 p.m. Additionally, the Museum Store will have commemorative Centennial products, including T-shirts, polo-style shirts, baseball caps, mugs, and posters, available for sale under the tent.
